❤ the clodi (cloth diaper) diary

Hi!
In this post, I want to share about my cloth diaper (clodi) diary, I am not giving a brand review, since many blogger mom gave a very good review such as mummysreview.

On the other hand, I want to share about my calculation on clodi usage. I started clothdiapering when my baby is 1 month old.

The neighbour asked : Why photo the laundry?
From left to right : Clodi inserts & Ribbon Diaper, Papoose PD(Pocket Diaper), Mommy's Touch PD, Grovia AI2/Diaper Cover , Lovelyworld PD, Grovia AI2/
Diaper Cover
My interest on clodi became deeper after I read The Eco-nomical Baby Guide: Down-to-Earth Ways for Parents to Save Money and the Planet that convinced me that cloth diaper is better on the health, environmental, and economical issue.

Health : To avoid diaper rash, easier on baby's skin (no chemical or bleaching).
Environmental : Disposable diaper is not biodegradable, estimated to decompose for about 250-500 years.
Economical : Estimated clodi cost is one tenth of disposable diaper. Here is a very good example of calculation.
Additional benefit :
Cute & Fashionable ^^v
Also according to my mommy-in-law, clodi also better to increase baby awareness on passing urine because baby can feel the wetness than disposable diaper that dries faster. Will be easier when the baby start to potty training.

To double the Eco effect in cloth diapering, we can do Do-it-yourself clodi. Unfortunately, I read this book on my 38 weeks of pregnancy. Even though my tummy is already big and some back problem issues, my sewing spirit is still high, I am still sewing on my 37-38 weeks, a kimono for a friend of mine which her EDD is 5 weeks earlier than mine.

I am thinking to try to sew the clodi, started with the liner. I went to Clementi Town Square with my big tummy, to look for some fleece for DIY clodi liner. But on my way there, I experienced a light brown discharge and after I call my doctor, he advised me to go to hospital directly to checked on the baby heart beat...

Surprise..surprise the next day is my delivery date that 1 week earlier than the EDD! Bye-bye DIY clodi!

Free clodi patterns from here

A few weeks after gave birth, I continued my clodi journey, browsed around the Internet for clodi online-shop. Singapore-wise, there's so many of them! The types & cute pattern made me confuse, which one should I buy?

Then I make a calculation based on some advise motherhood forums & blogs. And thinking can I still cut the numbers and still works? Here it is my calculation :

If we're using AI2 type (see image below), 4 numbers of clodi is sufficient fo 2 days use.

This is because since AI2 is easy to clean, after nappy change no need to wash (when it is not soiled) only wipe & air dry. But what I do is spray the clodi with water only. It is still easily dried  (3-5 hrs). After the use of the #4 clodi, I can use back the #1 diaper cover.

I use this to cover the ribbon diaper, but after baby is 3,5 month old, the volume of urine is increasing , I add diaper liner too (16pcs).

If we compare with pocket diaper type (see image below). We need about 16 clodi for 2 days use! This comes wirh 16 diaper liners too.

Unfortunately, before I knew the existence of AI2 type clodi, I bought several pocket diapers. That's why, I rotate the use of AI2 & pocket diaper while waiting for them dried in the laundry. See the explanation below about the usage of clodi for 2 days until the laundry day :

  • AI2 : is a cloth diaper with no pocket, the diaper liner is directly touching baby's skin. I use this for covering the ribbon diaper. Here I named them with numbering (1,2,3,4)
  • Pocket diaper : is a clodi with pocket, use for the liner/soaker, so it's not directly touching baby's skin. Here I name them with alphabeth (A-P)

This is how much I spent for clodi :
AI2: 4 (various brand cost around S$75)
Ribbon diaper : 24 (cost around S$15, bought in Indonesia)
Pocket Diaper : 13 (various brand, cost around S$90)
Inserts : 21 (various brand, cost around S$38)
... Total : S$218
*this is a starter & not included accessories: diaper pail, detergent...

Other better option is we can use only 8 (4 per 2 days) numbers of good quality AI2 for these 2 cycles with 32 liners (16 per 2 days). More economical.

This is the ribbon diaper that I am talking about (Image is from here)

Hungrybaby loves clodi!

Papoose Pocket Diaper S$10.5 from Milagro
Alvababy Pocket Diaper S$5.9 from myprecioustotz
Mommy's Touch Pocket Diaper S$18.9 from Milagro
Farlin Diaper Cover S$6.9 from Mums&Babes, United Square

I came, I saw, I conquered... clodi, clodi, clodi!

^^

ps : Which methods do you prefer for storing dirty clodi? Wet pail, dry pail, or like me, no pail at all? ;)
